Make yourself at home

By Brian Gallagher 01.02.23

By Safe House is a recently opened polyvalent space that provides a home for diverse cultural activities as well as a members’ club in the style of the classic British Gentleman’s club. Except that in the case of By Safe House it is all comers. There are four strands to By Safe House; the club (By Safe House), culture (By Events), wine (By Wine), and catering service (By Home). The initiative includes a gastronomic quality kitchen, a cocktail bar, resident sommelier and a variety of events spaces. With these basic ingredients pretty much anything is possible.

The main idea behind the project is to create a refuge where club members and their guests can find their tribes, be it cultural, business or other bon vivants. Over the last few decades Barcelona has missed out on numerous opportunities, its light has been somewhat dulled between one crisis or another. By Safe House is part of a fight-back. Culture is and has always been at the very essence of the city’s identity, from clubs to bookshops, exhibitions and performance space.

Isidor Andaluz is the driving force behind the project. With more than four decades experience in the hospitality and leisure sector between Barcelona and Ibiza his vision for a private club with a varied cultural offering is a long time ambition, now realised.

This new Barcelona club is aimed at both both men and women of all cultures, ages and sectors who, with a reasonable monthly fee have access to meeting spaces where and find a wide variety of services in more than 700 sq.m..

Located close to ‘Casa de les Punxes’ on Bruc, By Safe House has an industrial aesthetic with exposed structural columns, polished concrete floor and air-ventilation services. The space is somewhat softened with large murals painted on raw, exposed brick and bold anis accent walls combined with dark charcoal grey painted surfaces. The high ceiling and views to a narrow courtyard add a sense of spaciousness. The seating is moveable lending the main space a greater flexibility. In the basement there are two additional rooms for smaller events. And the sound system is noticeable for not being noticeable, like everything else here, it works like a well-oiled machine.

The main space accommodates an extensive and carefully  selected wine cellar with more than 180 references chosen by the sommelier Anna Solé Lopez. An enthusiastic expert in wine culture who is in charge of recommending and advising members on the best pairings, and providing advice.
