Black Coffee
From the South African underground to the current superstardom
House music was born in the African-American community of Chicago and New York City in the mid-80s. Maybe we already knew this, but the interesting thing is that this music of deep African roots has made the way back to its origin, it was planted in the south of the continent and gave rise to a purely African subgenre, which is becoming more and more international in the hands of artists like Culoe de Song or, our hero of this article, Nkosinathi Maphumulo, better known by his artistic pseudonym of Black Coffee.
How does this sound? Briefly we could decribe it as a more minimal house base that incorporates elements or vocalizations of Afro origin. Black Coffee has been working since early 2000, has 5 albums released so far and is the most important African producer and convenor of current electronic music today.
After having a successful season as a resident at the HÏ Ibiza last year (the disco formerly known as Space), he will be in charge of closing the Sónar Village on Friday the 15th, ideal scenario to dismiss the sun with the tribal sounds of the deep Africa.
