CÔR / CORE by Jorge Rodríguez-Gerada

By Brian Gallagher 12.05.21

Cuban artist Jorge Rodríguez-Gerada (1965) who was raised in the US and is now resident in Catalonia recreates a beating human heart framed by a pair of protective hands in Barcelona’s Parc del Pins of the Santa Coloma de Gramenet neighbourhood. The artist who is renowned for large scale ephemeral and more permanent art works wanted to reflect the multi-cultural profile of the neighbourhood which is home to 114 different nationalities. This shared human symbol occupies the lower stage area of an amphitheatre located just behind the square of the Sports Pavilion. Veins and arteries extend from the heart in the shape of facial profiles occupying the flat circular ground plane.

Covering an area of 1,500 square meters the art work belong to the tradition of Environmental Art, an entirely separate creative discipline that first came to prominence during the 60s and 70s, with Christo being perhaps one of the best known artists representing the genre. Since the age of Google Earth these installations can be appreciated from anywhere in the world, with just the help of a mobile phone. The Santa Coloma installation however is also legible from the terrace seating that forms the amphitheatre.

The origin of the word CŎR, from Latin, means heart, intellect and judgment; mind, soul and spirit; souls and people; The words CŎR and CORE are combined like the past and the present. CORE means essence; heart and core. This project aims to add value to the CŎRE of Santa Coloma, which can be understood by observing its urban morphology and its map.
