Rosemarie Castoro. Focus at infinity
First great retrospective of the New York artist
Rosemarie Castoro (New York, 1939-2015) was a fundamental artist, in continuous experimentation. She developed her work in the minimalist, post-minimalist and conceptual context in the United States and was part of the circle of the New York avant-garde of the 60s and 70s with Carl Andre (her husband until they separation in 1969), Donald Judd, Yvonne Rainer, Robert Morris, Sol LeWitt and Agnes Martin, among others. Castoro began her career in the field of graphic arts although she was immediately interested in dance, which decisively influenced his conception of space. Then she leaned towards painting and sculpture. She also participated actively in the Art Workers' Coalition and related to feminism, although she refused to be deeply involved because she considered it restrictive and a form of "segregation".
Under the title Focus at infinity, the Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona presents the first major institutional retrospective of the artist worldwide, curated by the conservative head of MACBA, Tanya Barson. The exhibition, centered on the period 1964-1979, brings together 250 works, many of them never exhibited, together with unpublished documentation such as her diary, showing the exceptional contribution of Castoro through painting, language and performance, and how some key figures of minimalism, especially women artists, have not received the attention they deserve. In the words of Lucy Lippard, who included her works in exhibitions at the Seattle Art Museum (1969) and the Vancouver Art Gallery (1970), Rosemarie Castoro managed to "subvert minimalism on her own ground". Abstract painting, conceptual art, performative actions, poetry, sculpture, installations and land art, evidence the diversity of her artistic practice.
In parallel, the curator and Mariana Cánepa will talk about this "painter-sculptor" -as Castoro called herself- (December 9th, 6:30 pm, museum rooms, 5 €), and Yvonne Rainer will offer the performance-conference The Concept of Dust (December 19th, 7 pm, Meier Auditorium, 5 €) and will perform the choreography The Concept of Dust: Continuous Project-Altered Annually (2014) (December 20th, 8 pm, CCCB theater, 15 €). Combined entry conference+dance: 17 €.
