Barcelona’s Perfume Museum first opened to the public in 1961, the aim is to illustrate the evolution of perfume bottles and containers throughout history from different cultures. Included within the display cases are receptacles from the Egyptians, Greeks, Etruscans, Romans, Arabs and other ancient cultures, including scent holders, perfumers as well as bottles dating back to the earliest eras up until the most modern creations of perfumers today. The museum's collection is made up of five thousand pieces including ancient and modern items, as well as miniatures, catalogues, labels from old perfume bottles and advertising material.

The museum is divided into two separate zones, the first of which covers glass perfume bottles, atomisers, ointment flasks, scent containers and other eclectic receptacles from ancient cultures to modern times. The second part contains industrialized perfume bottles dating from the second half of the eighteenth century till today. The first section is displayed in chronological order, while in the second, the containers are organised under labels, regardless of the year they first appeared. Visiting the Perfume Museum is thus in some ways like an art history lesson.
