This exhibition, curated by Juan Pablo Wert, explores the work of Martin Parr as a prime illustration of the surprising relations between photography and collecting in the context of the touristic experience, the reunifying stage of modern life.

Parr’s professional practice goes beyond the strict context of his photographic work due to his technical and poetic approach, and his activity as a collector.

The show examines whether Parr’s photography seeks to intervene in reality at an analytical level or whether it consists in recording percussive images that are in general shocking, grotesque or outright kitsch, with a purely illustrative or aesthetic end.

Susan Sontag said of photography “Collection photographs is collecting the world … Photographs are captured experience.” This exhibition curated by Juan Pablo Wart looks at the work of Martin Parr (member of the renowned MAGNUM agency) as an illustration of the surprising relations between photography and collecting within the framework of the tourist experience. The exhibition brings together a number of Martin Parr’s photographs and other objects from his collection. From a sociological perspective photography and collecting are based on the same creative nature: the act of selection and appropriation.
