Iluminando Joan Brossa

Santa & Cole

16.02.24

The Santa & Cole Gallery presents “Brossa, editor of the everyday”, an exhibition featuring a selection of serialised works by Joan Brossa showcased in an innovative installation that includes a poetic dialogue with light. The exhibition, which can be visited from February 6th through April 30th has been curated and designed by Antoni Arola, a lighting designer who has authored a new lamp for Santa & Cole used extensively throughout to illuminate the pieces.

Much of the artist's work is made up of ‘visual poems’ and object poems many of which were conceived as numbered editions, thus reflecting his interest in the promotion of his art: a social commitment to creating an accessible artwork that he regretted not having been able to achieve earlier in his career. This motivated Santa & Cole, with its manufacturing prowess, to presents a selection of Brossa's serial works with the intention of giving continuity to the poet's desire to make himself more accessible to everyone. The exhibition includes 18 pieces of graphic work and 30 limited edition objects.

The exhibition is curated and designed by Antoni Arola (Tarragona, 1960), interior designer, industrial and interior designer known for his lighting designs, who offers a new perspective on Brossa's work by adding an additional layer of poetry. With his characteristic ability to create magic with light, his playful use of his luminaires for Santa & Cole are configured in such as way to add intensity and highlight the lyrical nature of the works. The pieces are accommodated in niches created by hanging fabrics from a curved metal rail, lit by the recently presented Bijou (designed by Arola himself and published by Santa & Cole). The exhibition includes works by the musician and composer Josep M. Mestres Quadreny (Manresa, 1929-2021), with whom Brossa maintained a close friendship and whose work is a sound version of his poetry.
