Thirty-seven carefully selected works for the occasion among more than 2,000 titles of the video fund, one of the most important in Europe for its richness and its historical consistency. An unpublished material, never shown in Spain, that will travel for the first time outside Swiss borders and will be seen on exclusive basis in the Catalan capital. Thus, Screen Festival confirms its innovative editorial line, offering to the public the possibility to discover unknown collections and works in Spain as it was the case, for example, in 2011 with the collection of the Studio National des Arts Contemporains of Le Fresnoy.

Based on "Sound & Vision", one of the two main themes of the festival this year, Haute Fidélité looks back at several decades of acquisitions and offers a panorama of video’s artistic history, placing itself at the crossroads of many different experimental fields like contemporary art and music or image and sound. Presented in spaces that offer surprising dialogues, the works reveal the inherent issues in the medium.

Sound, regarded as a material, a mechanical event or a sensitive object, is often akin to physical and phenomenal experiences, when the video, due to its technical characteristics, becomes an experimentation field. The deferred and diffraction, for example, manifest themselves in operations of shifts and structural, formal or semantic alteration, resulting in an oscillation between consolidation and dissolution of certainties and meaning. Sound, considered as a temporal structure of the image, induced its own way of perception, in adequacy or against representation, by its rhythm or its absence, in a sort of distancing or dramatization. Sound, and especially music, seen as a vector of socio-cultural signs and codes, contains a singular, affective and emotional impact on individual experience, psychological construction and definition of oneself identity.

Through these themes and presenting artists from different generations and disciplines, this exhibition offers perspectives and points of view that intertwine and aim at revealing the complicity, relationships or dissonances between contemporary and historical works.
