Fernando Botero

World Master

07.03.25

Palau Martorell and Arthemisia, in collaboration with the Fernando Botero Foundation, present the largest exhibition ever held in Spain, and the first major exhibition dedicated to Fernando Botero in Barcelona. The exhibition, curated by Lina Botero and Cristina Carrillo de Albornoz, explores Fernando Botero's extraordinary versatility in the use of different painting techniques and the richness that this meant for his work. To illustrate this a collection of more than 110 pieces has been assembled, many of them exhibited for the first time, from private collections, including sculptures, oil paintings, watercolours, sanguine, charcoal and pencil drawings.

The exhibition is divided into 10 sections that introduce the viewer to the most iconic themes and series associated with Botero, such as his versions of masterpieces in the history of art, his beloved Latin America, the circus, religion, still life, and themes of political denunciation such as those works depicting violence in Colombia and torture in Abu Ghraib, Iraq. The exhibition “Fernando Botero: A Universal Master,” which will be open to the public from February 14 to July 20, 2025, includes previously unpublished works such as La Menina, according to Velázquez and Homage to Mantegna, a painting that remained out of the public eye for more than 40 years.
