Photobook Phenomenon

Opening exhibition at the new HQ of Foto Colectania

28.03.17

Architect Jaime Pons and the interior designer Pilar Líbano are responsible for the refurbishment of this space dedicated to art photography that accommodates the exhibition “Photobook phenomenon” till the 25th of June co-produced with CCCB and presented simultaneously in both institutions.

“Photobook Phenomenon” adds to our understanding and offers new perspectives on the importance and impact of this type of visual format and its place in contemporary culture, tracing a journey that goes from its beginnings up to the big productions of today and includes the various different visions from a selection of authors who explain the creative processes. It also looks at the challenge of publication of this type making use of diverse interactive systems that allow to the photobook to be appreciated from different approaches.

Over recent years photobooks have become very popular and take a central position within contemporary photography of today. In fact more photobooks are produced now than ever before, bought and sold, exchanged and collected. The independent publishing or self-publishing of books and zines has become a phenomenon of great importance in both the publishing and the artistic sector and we see how, in the digital era, there is a return to the printed object. Many authors have found in them, not only a useful tool to show their photographs, but also the perfect place for experimentation and creativity. There is also a growing interest in the reinterpretation of the history of photography through the role of the book and the printed photograph, as demonstrated by the ambitious studies and projects recently carried out around the globe.
