Over time Monjuïc cemetery has developed into an almost man-made landscape, hewn into the sandstone rock face above the city port, configured into terraces of multi-storey tombs with its extraordinary views over the Mediterranean Sea. Among its many attractions for visitors is this museum of funerary carriages used in Barcelona from the 19th and 20th Century which is unique in Europe. The exhibition in some respects represents an entire history of the city itself tracing the history of the city’s cemeteries and reflecting the pomp, ceremony and rituals that surround death and burial over the centuries.

The curved stone clad building is part of the master plan for the Monjuïc cemetery, accessed off the litoral, it marks road access to the precinct. Internally the exhibition firmly places the emphasis on the carriages featuring an impressive level of craftsmanship that transcends function and illustrates the carpentry, metalwork and glass skills of Barcelona city guilds. There are 13 funeral carriages, 6 horse drawn carriages for family members to accompany the body and 3 motorised hearses from the 20th Century. The carriages range from the most ornamental confections used by the bourgeoisie and aristocracy to those used for unmarried girls and children, the mezzanine level accommodates the motorized hearses, the latest of which dates from the 1940s. The exhibition layout is low key, a timber backdrop along the entire perimeter wall represents the urban theatre of the funeral ceremony (as well as containing all ancillary equipment), information panels and other related objects are distributed throughout.
