The museum aims to highlight the cultural importance and artistic expression and heritage of the ceramic tile which has formed an integral part of residential design in Spain from the Middle Ages to the present day. Can Tinturé, inaugurated in 2003, is the first monographic museum in Spain entirely devoted to the ceramic tile. A popular type of finish or cladding system, normally featuring a geometric pattern, conceived to be repeated ad infinitum. The museum displays a collection belonging to Salvador Miquel (Barcelona, 1900-1983) in a fascinating and contemporary style museography contrasting with the classical architecture of the building. Its collection of more than three thousand pieces ranges from the 14th Century to the mid 19th Century; just at the moment when their manufacture became industrialised, here at the adjacent Pujol y Bausis factory, or "The Rajoleta" which was a renowned centre of production. The permanent exhibition is organised in chronological order and according to geographic origin, mostly the tiles are Catalan, but also including pieces sourced from Valencia, Talavera, Sevilla, Terol, Muel and Delf.
