Yellow Duplex in Sant Gervasi, Barcelona
ARQUITECTURA-G
The architectural practice Arquitectura-G has established a reputation for bespoke highly chromatic projects that often treat residential projects like an abstract work of art. Using colour and minimalist volumes that contrast with their surroundings whether they be historical buildings or more contemporary ones. A recent residential project is a case in point, the refurbishment of an existing apartment into a home for a young family that includes 150 sq.m. as well as an outdoor terrace. Situated in Sant Gervasi the inspiration was provided by natural sun light and the colour yellow. The following description was provided by Arquitectura-G.
The project consisted of the refurbishment for a duplex apartment facing north accommodated within a mid-terrace apartment building in the uptown neighbourhood of Barcelona. To make the most of the available natural light new openings were introduced in the façade as well as the floor plate of the upper level allowing for a living room / dining area with an almost 6m high ceiling.

All the public areas of the house and the master bedroom for the parents were located on the lower level while the upper level was given over to the kids: two bedrooms, a shared bathroom and a playroom on the mezzanine overlooking the lower level living room.

To make up for the lack of natural light the decision was made to only use bright colours that would reflect the light towards some of the darker areas of the floor plan. The tropical timber grapia allowed for a continuity of floor finish from inside to outside on the terrace. For the walls a white treatment was chosen with pastel yellow mosaic ceramic tiles. Stairs, balcony and other furniture elements feature metal mesh sheeting to achieve a translucent effect throughout the interior.
