A house by the Mediterranean Sea

This single family residence located near Blanes, on the Cami de Ronda (a coastal walk along the Costa Brava) is all about the light and the views. The existing house was refurbished by Nook Architects for a family looking for a house that could accommodate family activities but also included spaces that could be used independently. The total area includes approximately 200 sq.m. internal space and a 40 sq.m. terrace. The house is organised over four floors, with the lower floors constructed against the cliff face at the foot of the beach.

The project included the repair of the outer shell of the house and the reorganisation of some of the rooms. New windows and roof lights were introduced in order to maximise the sunlight and a new terrace was added which is treated as an outside room. A main staircase connects all the levels from the attic to the living areas and bedrooms with the beach.

Original elements such as the timber beams and the tiled flooring were maintained so the house as a vintage charm. Nook Architects are also responsible for the design of the furniture much of which is specially made for the house. The colour scheme is inspired by the Mediterranean Sea, just outside and the approach to the internal environment is very low tech. To control the temperature simple devices like cross ventilation and shutters for the windows are employed in addition to ceiling fans.
