Teatre CCCB
José Antonio Martínez Lapeña & Elías Torres Tur Architects.
The recently opened Teatro CCCB occupies the remodelled Antiguo Teatro de la Casa de Caritat, designed by the architect Josep Goday in 1912. The listed structure is the last part of the jigsaw to complete the complex of buildings forming the Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona almost sixteen years after the first phase of the development. With 3,150 sq.m. it contains two auditoria the Sala Teatro a multifunctional space with a seating capacity for 600 spectators and the Sala Raval which can accommodate 170 people both equipped with the latest in audiovisual installations.
Destined to become a dynamic cultural venue within the Raval neighbourhood the building is connected with the main body of the CCCB at basement level, the architects have super-imposed a modern pattern of windows over the existing inner courtyard facade. Internally the lobby areas and escalators are laid out at an angle which mediates between the courtyard and C. Valldonzella. The star of the project is undoubtedly a series of first floor windows to the main auditorium aligned along the street with their fan lights protruding above the theatre’s roof keeping vigil over a new public space directly in front.
