Six N. Five by Isern Serra
Workspace refurbishment
Architect Isern Serra explores the possibilities of new ways of working with the project based in Poblenou / @22 area of Barcelona. An office / exhibition space for a digital designer combines an otherworldly materiality and colour scheme with the virtual work undertaken through computer networks, clouds and online communication. The interior is highly controlled but real and tangible factors such as nature, sunlight and social interaction are equally considered, if not predominant. The following description was provided by the architect.
A calm, coherent and exclusive space, defined by its subtle and simple design. The formal concept of the project came about from the idea of materiality itself, being part of the physical and tangible world. At the same time it is related to the digital and surrealistic work of the Six N. Five studio. The monochromatic and earth-toned environment together with the imprint of craft connects both worlds. A multidisciplinary space designed to share, achieve, but, above all, entice creativity.

The project is for the refurbishment of a ground floor space into a workspace for Ezequiel Pini and his creative studio Six N. Five. A multifunctional studio, aimed at offering an office space and a showroom for exhibitions. As well as adding an area for talks and presentations, a ‘home’ workshop for producing prototypes, a leisure and virtual reality area, and a specialty coffee cafe. In short, a small multidisciplinary space, open to the city with large cultural proposals. The building is located in Barcelona, in the Poblenou neighborhood, configured in an "L" shape layout, with direct street access and a large rear terrace.

The programme included an exhibition space, a café, warehouse, main work area with an isolated rack, a workshop and a meeting room with kitchen. The first decision was to clear the premises of all the existing partitions and suspended ceilings to recover the original concrete structure, and thus revealing the true volume of the space. The requirement for a diverse variety of spaces, together with the imposing height, allowed us to add a mezzanine space to accommodate the workshop and storage area. This mezzanine also allows for the separation of the public area from the more private areas of the studio.

The first space; looks over the street and is composed of a multipurpose tiered area that extends to the rear of the premises. This area is designed as an exhibition space and also functions as a waiting area for the café. Meanwhile transforming to receive the public who come to see a talk or exhibition given by a guest speaker. Parallel to the steps is the Three Marks Coffee corner, which helps visitors enjoy the experience more with its specialty coffee.

The mezzanine can be closed off with curtains on both levels, providing an adaptable element to divide the different areas allowing for different degrees of privacy. The more private area includes the studio, the workshop, the leisure area, and the meeting room including the kitchen. All these spaces are connected to a large terrace, which in addition to providing views of a vertical green wall also allows evening sunlight to enter the space.

The space was conceived as a large architectural sanctuary where the imprint of craftsmanship is very present. Earth tones are chosen to reinforce this idea of materiality which is achieved through the use of micro-cement on the floor and the functional elements. The same texture is attained on the walls using the same tone of paint with an irregular plaster base.
