Orvay, the colours of wine
A different type of winebar
Orvay is a wine bar designed by Isern Serra and Sylvain Carlet, with graphic design by Raquel Quevedo and Mikel Romero that creates a world of muted colour, strong shapes and quality materials, all conceived for experiencing the sensual qualities of a glass of wine. From the earth to the heavens here the interior design matches the feeling of enjoying something that comes directly from the land, with all its notes and subtelties. The following description was provided by the designers.
The Wine Bar is located where the Born’s Rambla commences, its main facade is just in front of Santa Maria del Mar, an emblematic ppart of Barcelona. It also has a large opening that gives a small passage through which it is accessed under a wide Medieval arcade.

Orvay is conceived as a place to discover wines, where the interior has been created using colours that suggest three different ways to savour the various typologies of wines served at this particular bodega. We started with the idea of creating a game of colour. We wanted colour to be the main protagonist of the space. So the zones are described using three different tones. Earth colour refers to a specific geography or D.O. (the most conventional way to choose a wine). Green alludes to the fields of vines and the different typologies of vitis or vine varieties, of the ways of referring to wines. And Rosé that evokes the grape itself, one of the elements that gives most character to wine and of which there are more varieties.
-
We wanted an honest and natural space but at the same time one that was as sophisticated as the wine itself. So the false ceilings were removed and it was decided to showcase the structure of the building with its medieval walls and arches, combined with a natural light oak wood floor laid diagonally that was stained for the different areas. The white marble was chosen to create the custom designed bar and furniture. We liked the chromatic relationship that was created between the three spaces so there is no element that separates them visually, only the forcefulness of the colour itself in the different materials marks this separation.
-
The first area is the bar itself, natural stone of its walls have been left as found and the surroundings are dyed a beige colour, as a metaphor for the Denomination of Origin, the land. This tasting area includes three high tables of white marble with a sculptural character that create a tension between the forcefulness of the massive circular base and the lightness of the tops. The stools chosen are Afternoon by Menu that contrast their lightness with the lines of lines with the custom made marble tables.

As a common thread idea running through the project we wanted to add large circular motifs as an allusions to the world of wine. In this area the circle was materialized in a mirror dyed red, its colour reflection is like looking through a glass of red wine. The second zone refers to the vineyards, to the different types of vine with where the wines are produced, that so the mirror it tinte green as a block colour. This area, as well as accommodating the large black tubular wine rack also has the seating tables, with a large natural oak bench that lends a unitifed feel to the setting and a large mirror that highlights the use of the found Medieval arch, generating a new space. The chairs are the Resuld de Hay designed by Friso Kramer & Wim Rietveld.

Finally, the third area that refers to the grape, another of the areas connected with choosing a pecific type of wine where the entire space is done in pink. This smaller area features a large wooden table that mimics the floor pattern used as a reserved space for groups. -
The lighting has a double function at Orvay having to work both during the day and at night, and aims to provide a physical expression of an ethereal quality that constitutes light using neon strips that draw lines floating in space, the neon becomes a perfect circle of light and the Anastassiades lamp for Flos is configued like a globe. Three simple geometries that attract us a lot in the studio.
