Mediamanga

Small but perfectly formed restauarnt

06.02.18

With such a competitive food scene as that of Barcelona new gastronomic restaurants here are obliged to offer much more than simply excellent food, they must also provide a well designed interior. The Mediamanga restaurant which opened last year is the little brother of Mont Bar, both are located on the corner of Aribau and Diputación (just behind the Plaza Universidad). Mont Bar has established itself as a culinary reference since opening in 2013. The Cristina Carulla Studio, a Barcelona based interior designer who works on residential and commercial projects was commissioned to provide a contrasting interior design for this smaller but nonetheless equally excellent gastronomic restaurant.

The style is somewhere between art-deco and American diner with a retro feel in terms of the geometric motifs, materials and attention to detail such as the Gae Aulenti lamp. The designer’s objective was to find an expression that would be somehow familiar but equally indeterminate in terms of its decor. The stuccoed walls, the white tiled columns and the marble arches that are repeated throughout the space are elements typical of the Catalan masia or farmhouse while the main bar with its triple half-round profile clad in marble on steel supports provides a contrasting elegance.

The restaurant is positioned on the chaflan so has an angled layout internally (formerly occupied by a pizza restaurant with a window to the street for take-away service which now allows customers to sit outside at its counter, weather permitting). The kitchen and food preparation areas are finished in white and steel like any domestic kitchen, in sharp contrast to the dining room that features cedar panels, Guatemala green marble floors and leather stools.

Quality materials such as upholstered leather stools, cedar wood and marble give Mediamanga a timeless feel.
