Matèria moves into a new era. Combining the best of the past and the future the new owners bring a fresh injection of energy to an already established stalwart of local design expertise. Matèria, has been a leading design and decoration shop in the Galvany neighbourhood since 2009. Founded by Beatrice Askanazy, the shop is now in the hands of Nina Ordeig, Marta Salvadó, Jara Varela, and Dasha Vaimberg, four professionals from the world of design, architecture, communication, and image consultancy who are taking on the challenge of giving continuity—and new life—to this project.

This new vision is the sum of four professional careers that balance each other out, combining experience and savoir-faire. Architects Marta Salvadó and Dasha Vaimberg, founders of the VaimbergSalvadó studio (2012), bring a professional and technical vision that allows Matèria to offer a comprehensive service to both private clients as well as architectural and interior design studios.

Photographer and creative director Jara Varela, with a client list that includes brands such as Santa & Cole, Artek, and Lemaire, adds a characterful aesthetic sensibility. Nina Ordeig, a communications and marketing specialist, former communications director for Santa & Cole, and nanimarquina, adds a strategic perspective and aesthetic sensibility, in addition to her knowledge of the design sector.

    The new project is reflected in a renovation of the space—located at 43 Rector Ubach Street—and an expanded catalogue. “Over the past year, we’ve started collaborating with major studios in Barcelona, ​​advising them on product selection and recommendations for their projects,” the owners explain. The transition began in June 2024, when they learned that Beatrice Askanazy was retiring:

    “We agreed that Matèria was a much-needed shop in Barcelona. We saw an opportunity to continue its legacy and, at the same time, create something of our own: a space for the products, brands, and artists we loved and couldn’t find elsewhere in the city. We thought: if no one else is doing it, we will. In our own way.”

    Among the brands represented are local names such as Bd Barcelona, ​​Marset, Isist Atelier, Santa & Cole or Trenat, along with Nordic firms such as Carl Hansen & Søn, Fredericia, Hay, J.L. Møller, Louis Poulsen, Montana, &Tradition, or Wästberg, and international classics such as Alessi, Astep, Artek, Capellini, Lumina, Magis, Nemo Lighting, Objekto, Oluce, Rex Kralj or Thonet.

    It also includes lesser-known or underrepresented proposals in the city, such as Campeggi, Frama, Hollands Licht, Lenhi, Lk Hjelle, Ny Chair, Rexite, Rye Beds, Pierre Chapo, Plus Halle, Sammode or Tecta.

    Especially recognized for its work with fabrics, Matèria offers a wide selection of carpets, curtains and other textiles from brands such as Cotlin, CMO, C&C, Baina, Charvet, Decopur, Dolz, Francisco Cumellas, Grupo Lamadrid, Kenkawai, Kieffer, Kvadrat, Loro Piana, Magnibert, Mark Alexander, Mikmax, Nanimarquina, Pierre Frey, Rubelli, Ruckstull, Sette, Teixidors, Tekla or Wallace Sewell.
