Happy Books

16.11.12

A space measuring 32 sq.m. accommodating an outlet of the Happy Books chain within the cloister of Barcelona’s gothic cathedral that combines religious artefacts and tourist souvenirs. The project is highly impacting because it respects the austerity of the existing architecture of the host space. The profusion of elements is a function of the programme which requires the display of multiple products on the walls of the shop which must also achieve harmony with the sobriety and tall ceilings of the impressive surroundings. The furniture was also designed by the same designers featuring quality materials which one would normally expect to find in a church; timber and iron which are also used for the shop’s bookshelves. The illumination is provided mostly by light bulbs  together with some built-in features that heighten the drama of the space. The uncomfortable combination of commerce and religion is attenuated by the geometry, order and clarity of the design which also includes cleverly integrated storage space below the display cases.
