Iranian sgraffito ceramics
An ancient technique, a modern concept store
With a carefully-curated selection of ceramics, jewellery, homeware and clothes, Āheste presents this black and white series of ceramic objects (vases, wall decorations, plates, glasses, spoons) made with a sgraffito technique where the potter applies layers of glaze or slip and scratch at it to show the base layer of colour.

These pieces have a high aesthetic quality as a result of an incredibly skillful craftsmanship.

Some famous examples of Iranian sgraffito ceramic works can be found at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York). They were collected in an archaeological excavation in Nishapur, an important religious and commercial town in northeastern Iran, and one of the main production centers of sgraffito pottery. The ruins of this town were investigated during the “Iranian expedition” of the MET in the 1930s.
