c/ Hospital, La Raval
The Raval is a frenetic location to live in Barcelona, its streets are filled with noise, colour, life and energy. The objective with this apartment refurbishment by Acabado Mate arquitectura was to create a refuge, one filled with light and things that had been found or collected over the years. The project was designed for a young couple with a young child as a home a family home. The description was provided by the architects.
Georgia and Pablo had already been living in the Raval neighbourhood on c/ Hospital and Rambla del Raval for a number of years. They wanted to make some changes to the space in preparation for the arrival of their first child Otto.

The apartment had been partly refurbished: the spaces towards the street were already knocked into one, and the traces on the ceiling were still evident; the kitchen was located in the rear section of the house over looking an internal courtyard while the back bedroom had a bathroom but with just a shower and a WHB.
-
The project re-imagined the space in a more radical way than had originally been envisaged: the kitchen was moved to where the living room was, a much larger space with lots of sunlight and facing the sea, creating what the clients had always wanted an open plan area for cooking, eating, reading and now playing with Otto. His room was provided where the kitchen had been before, in the quieter area of the house.

The master suite remains where it was, creating a full bath, laundry room, and custom closet.
-
During the building works some of the original hydraulic tiles were uncovered beneath the timber floors which were then integrated with new oak parquet flooring around the kitchen / dining area and micro-cement within the corridor and bathrooms.
-
The colour palette was suggested by the floors and the original paintings on the catalan vaulted ceilings: red tiles for the hallway floor, blue for the main bathroom and yellow for the kitchen furniture. The project is completed by the client’s furniture collection, objects and paintings that Giorgia and Pablo had been buying over the years. The final result is a cheerful and colourful house, bathed by sunlight that enters from the Rambla del Raval.
