Explore Spa by Le Méridien

Mediterranean Experience

By Brian Gallagher 23.06.23

The Explore Spa by Le Meridien experience isn’t just about the treatments and therapies, but everything that surrounds it, from the building to getting there, the before and after. This Spa, just an hour’s drive from Barcelona is a whole different world where light, water and landscape come together. Accommodated within the fascinating Le Méridien Ra Beach Hotel & Spa it’s the combination of accommodation and spa that makes this place unique. Although they both operate independently from one another, one is enhanced by the other. Since 1929 there has been a place of wellness here, connected with the high intensity of iodine released into the water by a local seaweed (also used for eh Spa therapies), initially a TB Clinic and nowadays a stunningly beautiful hotel on the Costa Dorada.

The Costa Dorada has a different topography to the Costa Brava, the Mediterranean presents a gentler incline, and its sand is much finer with fewer rocks. There are long stretches of beach that extend as far as the eye can see and it’s not as built-up as the Costa Brava. Along these stretches is El Vendrell, just 35 minutes from Barcelona’s Airport and even closer to Reus. Ra Beach Hotel is on the San Salvador beach, the building sits practically on the sand, its symmetrical massing with deep setbacks makes for an iconic structure with a wide terrace facing the sea. Throughout the interior the hotel’s varied history is preserved in fascinating details creating an otherworldly sanctuary. The original part of the hotel is Art Deco style while the extensions are contemporary. The duplex style bedrooms of the main pavilion (the original block) look out to the Mediterranean directly, the new wings create two separate courtyards overlooking sheets of salt water, slightly set back, but all with sea views flanking the main block.

The Spa is a separate building located adjacent to the main hotel with its own entrance, it is however connected on the upper hotel floor corridors. With 7,200 sq.m. of built area divided over 5 floors The Explore Spa is one of the largest in Europe and attracts visitors year-round. The jewel in the crown is the terrace with an indoor and outdoor pool on the top level overlooking the sea together with a wet and dry sauna. The waters of the Mediterranean are the main focus as far as the treatments and therapies are concerned, many involve seaweed or clay sourced from the area. There are 55 individual cabins for massages and therapies including Thalasso, Ayurveda, beauty, Vichy shower, oriental therapies, relaxing and seaweed massages, among others.
