Eclipse Tattoo Parlour

A space of lost & found

20.11.18

Estudio Fàbric (Pedro Garcia, Alain González and Javier Hernani) have recently completed the Eclipse Tattoo Parlour on C/ Torrent de l’olla, in the Gràcia neighbourhood. A space that is both a gallery and a workshop, the architects have made use of found elements and added new elements to create an open, bright and attractive place to work and visit. The following description was provided by Estudio Fabric.

The premises, an old clothing store that had been left vacant in recent years, consisted of 140 sq.m. broken up into small, dark and narrow spaces, split over two floor levels including a mezzanine using. After removing the light partitions and mezzanine the qualities of the space became aparent: ceramic walls, an intermediate gallery of arches, some raised areas and a small backyard. During demolition it was also discovered that the entrance to the premises originally consisted of a large arch, four meters in height, which was later covered to provide a small standard size door.

The first decision was to recoup this element and in doing so open the front room to the street, acting as a large drawing studio and reception area. The back room which is more private accommodates the tattoo booths. These spaces are defined using light metal partitions that act as screens, providing privacy but allowing glimpses of what happens on the other side of the glass, without completely seeing it. These screens are constructed using painted black metalwork and combinations of transparent and translucent glass, depending on the height and angle of vision. A tiled skirting combined with black hexagonal tiled floor forms a ‘hygienic’ skin that protects these aseptic chambers and separates them from the circulation zones, where the existing elements such as the arches of the gallery and the ceramic walls which also feature a display of numerous tattoo samples. The area is illuminated entirely by bespoke designer fittings, also in black metal, utilising standard plumbing products which provide variable colour ambient or task lighting depending on whether they in a work area (whiter light) or a customer service (warmer).

Other inserted elements within space also feature plate metal painted black: the patio window frames, storage area door, the shutters, the signage over the entrance (with the logo perforated and backlit) and the main access door. This element, which dominates the front room is finished with a glass and metal panel on the inside, with a marked presence, while the exterior side is formed by three folding doors that are accommodated within the thickness of the wall when open also providing a secure closure, maximizing the depth of the facade and providing both a presence and a scale on the street that distinguishes it from its neighbours.

    About Eclipse Tattoo

It was while tattooing that Rotor, David Tejero and Carlo meet each other some years ago. During that time while working in the same environment, in that anecdotic sea of adventures and misadventures, their friendship was forged. Working together was natural, almost logical, so soon they began thinking about building and creating new things together, to pool resources and grow. First with the artistic collective "Proyecto Eclipse" and now as a studio: ECLIPSE TATTOO BARCELONA. A logical evolution. In this new space they want to provide somewhere for their most personal work reflecitng each of them and their own evolution within the world of tattooing. Nacho Eterno and Anna Revuelto, representing the up and coming generation of tattoo artists, closing the circle, a total of five professionals creating strange, unexpected and exciting works of art.
