Cloudworks – Barcelona

Creating a co-working

17.09.20

Cloudworks has a double meaning as the title of the latest design project by Sandra Tarruella Interioristas. On the on hand it references the location – among the rooftops over Barcelona, and on the other the digital world of work where cloud refers to the way data is stored. The world of work is undergoing a revolution right now morphing into something still unknown; perhaps virtual, remote from urban locations, more flexible. However the  spaces where people still share in order to work together need to be as conducive as possible to being healthy, pleasant and inspiring. The following description was supplied by the designer and describes a co-working project located on Barcelona’s premier avenue, Passeig de Gràcia.

For this latest co-working project the Sandra Tarruella Interioristas team had to think about the new ways of working and take on the values of a new client. A fresh work space was required with maximum flexibility and at the same time a comfortable space for future clients.

The project is located in the city centre of Barcelona and is divided over two floors within the same building. On the first floor there’s a large courtyard within the interior of the block and on the top floor there are two terraces on either side of the building set-backs. Both the interior spaces and the exteriors are included as part of the project so that the users of these spaces can take advantage of the different work area options. It’s also important to point pit that even though the project is divided over two floors the overall ambience is maintained and the spaces are considered an extension of one another.

Another important aspect of the project is the layout of the different separate spaces, to achieve the maximum versatility we were asked to crate different typologies of work places. We managed to do that on both floors by creating a larger central area surrounded smaller spaces used as cellular offices, meeting rooms and service areas. This central area is finished differently to the other areas with a carpet that recreates the typical suelo hidráulico (encaustic tiles) lending it a fresh contemporary feel and differentiates it from the other spaces on the same floor. Several different seating and meeting options are also employed, everything from the traditional chair and desk of the traditional officeoutdoor areas to be used as an extension of the indoor offices.

It was very important for this project that natural light would reach all the spaces on each floor. To do that we opted for using transparent glass partitions between the different rooms as well as to define the central area but using panels in some of the frames to differentiate them from their neighbours.

For the ceilings in order to provide an innovative touch suitable for these spaces it was decided to leave the vaults and all the installations visible, but painted the same off-white colour so that they did not stand out. The general lighting features industrial-type fluorescent elements that are repeated throughout the entire ceiling. To add extra illumination linear lamps are occasionally lowered above the tables to achieve optimum work lighting and to break the pattern.

For both floors the project includes a common area positioned near the offices so that the users can relax and have a coffee or eat between working hours. The office includes a bar counter area that allows after-work events and social get togethers adding another dimension to this co-working.
