Prat de Llobregat is a suburb of Barcelona and location of its international airport, an autonomous municipality on the banks of the Llobregat delta with its own ‘casco antiguo’ and a nature reserve on the Mediterranean, it has a population of approximately 65,000 inhabitants. A new cultural centre was provided in 2011 for the town situated on the southern side of its main public square Plaza Catalunya. Containing a library, auditorium and archive as well as offices and teaching spaces the building has a dynamic relationship with the square, each of the separate programmes has its own individual entrance either directly off the square or through communal internal spaces marked by canopies and set backs within the external building envelope. There are two levels of underground car parking provided beneath the building which also provide direct access. The sculpted cubic volumes of the building are clad using a sober palette of materials; granite, zinc, glass and wood which also serve to differentiate the various activities accommodated within. Internally the materials are softer and more user-friendly creating a comfortable working environment and a generous and bright place to visit.
