Brick-Topia

Festival Eme3

By Brian Gallagher 07.08.13

Brick-Topia is an intriguing amoeba like structure located within the courtyard of Fabra i Coats Contemporary Art Exhibition Space which can be visited during the summer months.

Winner of the Build-It category of the Eme3 Festival the pavilion is inspired by the traditional vaulted brick structural system (boveda catalana) combined with new information technology programmes for calculating structural forces. Designed by architects MAP13 together with José Luis González and Ángel Truñó, architect and professor at Escuela de Arquitectura de Barcelona. Constructed by architectural students and specialised contractors the form is fluid and sinuous and pushes the materials used to their very limit.

The form and layout of the pavilion aims to provide a complementary series of spaces within the courtyard to be used for informal activities taking its inspiration form the recently converted surrounding industrial warehouses (previously used as a textile factory) and materials that reflect the use of this age old traditional way of building.

  • Accommodating a programme of lesiure activities
