Bar Blitz

Slow design for fast food

By Brian Gallagher 19.03.15

A recently completed refurbishment project measuring 80 sq.m. accommodating a sandwich bar located on a corner of Plaza Urquinaona with Ronda Sant Pere opposite the Teatre Borras. Designed by Flexo Arquitectura the idea is to provide an efficient and quality alternative to the surrounding fast-food joints where clients can grab a sandwich or a beer and move on.

The architectural approach here has been to mix budget materials including plywood and acoustic insulation panels with marble tiling and mirrors in order to create the illusion of a larger space. A continuous marble bar counter top becomes an eating surface which runs along the entire perimeter of the restaurant including across the windows overlooking the always busy square outside. These windows can be raised guillotine like when the weather permits which reinforces the inside/outside nature of the design. The trapezoid flooring tiles is a recurring motif throughout the interior used for a continuous vertical dado along the walls and bar counter.

The gastronomic offering is based on a simple straightforward menu, the sandwiches are extra large and include pastrami, chicken, salmon, roast beef, wheat gluten, the classic bikini (ham and cheese toasted), Frankfurter sausage with onion rings and  jalapeño peppers as well as the traditional fuet (cold sasuage). The offering is completed by a range of local beers and vermouth as well as non-alcoholic options.
