1968, Faro Barcelona

Retro lighting

By Brian Gallagher 04.05.16

Mood lighting is not so much about supplying the right lux levels but creating an atmosphere, when combined with a decorative object a soft illumination can function equally well when switched on or off. Jordi Busquets, the designer of the recently launched 1968 lamp was inspired by the timber carcases of electrical goods like televisions and gramophones of the 1950s and 60s. Manufactured by the local firm Faro this lamp is crafted from walnut, expressed using soft curvilinear forms similar to the TV sets of years gone by, with a fabric shade that covers a highly efficient LED light source. Supported off the ground on 3D printed feet. The meeting of high-tech and tradition. The light provided is cosy and warm, perfect for living rooms and lounges or indeed contract applications.

Jordi Busquets is a prolific industrial designer who trained at Milan’s Scuola Politecnica di Design and established his studio in Barcelona since 1987 where he designs everything from furniture to everyday consumer products. Busquets makes objects that convey emotions and are intended to be used in our day-to-day lives, pieces that are conceived to combine form and functionality. Other iconic products designed by Busquets include the Papillon suspension lamp and the Wind ventilator, both in collaboration with the Faro Group.
